Health officials announce two West Nile virus deaths in New Jersey
Trenton, New Jersey — Two deaths in New Jersey West Nile virus State health officials announced Friday that this is the first case this year.
The New Jersey Department of Health said one of the deaths was in Cumberland County and the other in Mercer County. Officials said both were elderly people.
Health officials said six more cases of West Nile virus were reported in Bergen, Camden, Cumberland, Hudson, Mercer and Middlesex counties. All of the patients are people 50 or older.
These cases are Two cases were reported earlier this summer in Middlesex and Union counties.Both patients have been treated and released from hospital, health officials said.
Health officials said seven of the eight total infected people were hospitalized and experienced swelling of the brain, or the lining that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.
Three people who donated blood in Bergen, Passaic and Somerset counties have also tested positive for West Nile virus so far this year, but none of them showed symptoms, according to the health department.
EEE Cases Reported in New Jersey
Health officials say New Jersey has reported one case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), a mosquito-borne disease, this year.
The patient, a teenager from Atlantic County, began showing symptoms in early July and was hospitalized, according to the health department. The patient has since been released from the hospital, health officials said.

How to protect yourself from West Nile Virus (EEE)
Both West Nile virus and EEE are usually transmitted through the bite of a mosquito that has fed on an infected animal.
To protect against these illnesses, health officials recommend using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and long pants, and avoiding being outdoors at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.
New Jersey residents should make an effort to empty or change standing water outdoors, such as in bird baths, pool covers, clogged gutters and outdoor pet water dishes, at least once a week to prevent mosquito breeding.
“New Jersey has had a long-standing and robust mosquito control and prevention program in place at the state and local levels that has helped strengthen our protection,” state Health Commissioner Kaitlan Baston said in a statement.
Symptoms of West Nile Virus and EEE include fever, chills, body aches, and joint pain, although health officials say most infected people are asymptomatic. Older adults and those with compromised immune systems are at higher risk of becoming seriously ill from the disease.
