Google Brings Earthquake Alerts to Android in All 50 US States

Google has just announced that it is expanding the availability of earthquake alerts on Android to all 50 states in the United States. The alerts system was initially launched in 2020 in just three US states — California, Oregon, and Washington — and will soon be available in all 50 US states, plus six US territories. According to Google, the rollout will be completed in the coming weeks. For those who don’t know, Earthquake Alerts on Android provides early warnings seconds before shaking begins. The alerts rely on traditional seismometers to detect earthquakes, but Google is complementing existing government earthquake alert systems for places that don’t have USGS ShakeAlert with the help of Android phones. This is possible thanks to the accelerometers built into Android devices, which are expected to provide another layer of preparedness and potentially life-saving information across every state in the US.

According to Google, accelerometers can sense vibrations, which can indicate a possible earthquake. When a phone in an area detects shaking, Android Earthquake Alerts analyzes crowdsourced data to confirm that an earthquake is occurring. The system is trained to provide two types of warning alerts if it detects an earthquake of magnitude 4.5 or greater: “Be careful” alert: This alert indicates weak or light shaking, giving you a heads-up to prepare for a potentially stronger earthquake. “Take action” alert: This alert indicates that moderate to severe shaking is expected and prompts you to take immediate action to protect yourself.
