First case of deadly mosquito virus in Rhode Island in five years
Health officials announced Wednesday that Rhode Island has seen its first confirmed case of eastern equine encephalitis in five years, a potentially deadly mosquito-borne virus that has been spreading across southern New England this summer.

“We are seeing an increase in cases of mosquito-borne diseases in Rhode Island and neighboring areas of Massachusetts and Connecticut,” Rhode Island Health Commissioner Jerome Larkin said in a press release Wednesday. “This underscores how important it is for all Rhode Islanders to continue to protect themselves from mosquito bites.”
Public health officials recommend avoiding outdoor activities at sunrise and sunset, when mosquitoes are most active, and when outside, people should wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants and use insect repellent such as DEET, they added.
Rhode Islanders should install screens on windows and doors in their homes to eliminate standing water that can serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, RIDOH added. People should also properly drain any items that may collect water, such as gutters, swimming pools, planters and trash cans.
