Los Angeles Hit by Two More Earthquakes North of Malibu

Two small earthquakes struck north of Malibu Monday morning, just four days after a 4.7-magnitude quake struck the same area along the Pacific Coast.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the first quake, a magnitude 3.7, struck at 4:22 a.m. about a mile north of Malibu just west of Canaan Dome Road. The second quake struck at 7:05 a.m. in roughly the same area just east of Canaan Dome Road and had a magnitude of 2.8.

A Los Angeles County Fire Department spokesman said the department had not received any calls for service in response to the earthquakes.

Over the past 10 days, eight earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater have been centered nearby.

Thursday's Malibu quake was part of the 14th series of earthquakes with at least one magnitude 4.0 or greater quake this year in Southern California, said seismologist Lucy Jones, a research associate at the California Institute of Technology.

According to a recent three-year data sample, an average of five earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 to 4.0 occur annually in the greater Los Angeles area.

The first quake struck on Monday at a depth of 6.6 miles and the second at a depth of 5.9 miles, according to available data.
