Residents of Japan's quake-hit Noto Peninsula are exhausted after having to evacuate again after heavy rains.

Heavy rains in the northern part of the Noto Peninsula forced 621 people to take shelter in 37 evacuation centers in Wajima, Suzu and Noto, Ishikawa Prefecture.

Most of the displaced were also affected by the earthquake that struck the Noto Peninsula on January 1, and are now at a loss about how to rebuild their lives after having to return to evacuation life again.

The body of an elderly woman was found in the city of Wajima on Wednesday, bringing the death toll to nine.

About 20 displaced people have taken refuge at the Kawarada community hall in Wajima.

Heavy rain battered the two-story home of Tomoe Yachi. Yachi, 64, who lives in Wajima, had just returned to her home after evacuating it following the Jan. 1 earthquake.

“I lost everything again and I feel like I'm below zero,” she lamented.

There is no running water in the hall. The displaced can get drinking water from water trucks, but they cannot shower or wash clothes, making life difficult.

“It feels like we've gone back in time to right after the earthquake,” said Haruo Noda, 85, who left his home near the hall.

In the Otani Ward of Suzu, which was cut off by the rain, about 50 people took refuge in the gymnasium of Otani Elementary and Junior High School. The water supply was cut off after a landslide caused by the rain damaged a water purification facility, and the electricity was cut off. A generator truck has just arrived, and power has been restored around the gymnasium.

Osako Anyashi, 84, from the area, took refuge at her daughter's house in Aichi Prefecture after the quake partially destroyed Anyashi's home on New Year's Day. After returning to Suzu in May, she cleaned her house during the day and slept in an evacuation center at night.

Anyachi was at home on Saturday when heavy rains began. The rain gradually intensified, and the nearby river continued to rise. When the power went out and the phone line was cut, she realized her life was in danger and evacuated the house. She said she has been too scared to return home since then.

“I have been in danger several times since New Year’s Day,” Anyashi said. “I just hope I can get through each day safely.”

Police and fire departments continued their search Monday as at least three people remained missing.

About 50 firefighters and police officers continued their search in the town of Noto, clearing roadside brush with poles and examining video footage transmitted from drones above.
