Australian legend Greg Chappell's baggy green cap has disappeared

Australian cricket legend Greg Chappell has revealed that his beloved loose-fitting green shirt has gone missing.

Speaking of the Cricket Et Al PodcastThe 76-year-old stated that the prized possession had mysteriously disappeared from storage, but stopped short of saying it had been stolen.

Chappell says he put his green bags in storage a decade ago, but only discovered it when he was clearing them out to move to Adelaide.

We had stuff in storage for about 10 years, and when we moved back to Adelaide we took everything out of storage and I was expecting to find that baggy green cap, but it wasn't there, Chappell told journalists Peter Lalor and Gideon Haigh on Cricket Et Al.

I don't know what happened to it. I don't want to make accusations, but it was saved, but it doesn't seem to have come out.

I don't surround myself with my cricket memorabilia (but) I'm a little disappointed.

Chappell received more than one baggy green during his career. News Corp reports that the baggy green he gave to Englishman Geoffrey Boycott sold at auction four years ago for $15,000.

But the baggy green he still held is now gone.

Chappell is regarded as one of the greatest Australian batsmen ever, with 24 centuries in 87 Test matches in the 1970s and 1980s.

The Chappell brothers Greg, Ian and Trevor all played for Australia during that period.

Along with fast bowler Dennis Lillee and wicketkeeper Rod Marsh, Chappell was part of an iconic trio who defected to the Kerry Packers World Series Cricket in the late 1970s.

But unlike Lillee and Marsh, Chappell was not given a fundraising recommendation at the end of his career to help him after his retirement from cricket.

He was struggling and last year he raised over $100,000 through GoFundMe.

“I'm not on the bone of my ass,” Chappell told News Corp last year.

I certainly don't want to give the impression that we are in great need, because we are not, but we are not living in luxury either.

I think most people assume that we all live in luxury because we played cricket. While I certainly don't cry about my poverty, we don't enjoy the benefits that today's players do.

It follows David Warner's baggy green saga last summer, which saw the outgoing opener release a video plea for return of the capbut it only turned up again a few days later, halfway through the SCG New Year's Test.

Warners baggy green was simply lost and not discovered in an extensive search in the team hotel.

The bag in question was always with the rest of the team's luggage in the team's room at their hotel in Sydney. In total, 64 bags made the journey from Melbourne to Sydney.

Warner then walked into the post-match press conference, with the green jersey safely on his head, and suggested that questions should be asked of team security.

You'll have to ask security. I wish I'd pulled a prank like that, he said.

There has been speculation that Warner's cap went missing as part of a team prank, but his Her wife Candice wouldn't throw anyone under the bus.

Chappell is a doyen of Australian cricket and has built a reputation as one of the country's best talent identifiers since retiring as a player.

He described Cameron Green as the best cricketer he had seen since Ricky Ponting, shortly before the Western Australian all-rounder was picked to make his Test debut.

Chappell was also a national team selector and a member of the Australian Cricket Board.

He also runs the Chappell Foundation, which raises money for charities that help the homeless.
