North Carolina dogs dying after a respiratory disease test are positive for the virus that causes COVID-19
This is the first case of a novel coronavirus found in a dog in North Carolina.
According to NCDHHS, at about 6 pm last Monday, the client arrived at NC State Veterinary Hospital with a dog showing signs of dyspnea that developed earlier that day.
The dog later died of the disease. The client told the staff that a member of the family had previously tested positive for COVID-19 and later tested negative.

Samples collected from dogs were tested for SARS-CoV-2 virus and sent to the National Veterinary Services Laboratory for testing.
According to NCDHHS, these tests confirmed positive results.
Necropsy was performed to determine the animal’s health at the time of death and the cause of death. The investigation is still in progress.
“Based on available information, animals are considered to be at low risk of spreading the virus to people,” state public health veterinarian Dr. Carl Williams said in a news release.
