Government funds VR and AI research to combat drug deaths
The Government has awarded £12 million in grants to projects across the UK researching technologies such as AI, wearable technology and virtual reality (VR) to help people with addiction.
A total of 11 projects from eight organizations have received funding from the Addiction Healthcare Goals program run by the Department of Life Sciences.

Another study used a watch-like device to measure which stimuli in the environment lead to drug cravings, and used VR to create realistic situations that repeatedly triggered people in a safe environment. The aim is to help people overcome the triggers of cocaine addiction through exposure.
Professor Anne Lingford-Hughes, Chair of the Addiction Healthcare Goals Committee, said: “New approaches to treating drug addiction and reducing drug-related deaths, particularly from overdose, are urgently needed.

These projects were selected as part of a Scottish Government project. The challenge of reducing drug deaths and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NIHR) i4i addiction: Innovation Award for Treatment and Recovery.
Some of the projects are based in Scotland, which has the highest drug death rate in Europe.
These include research being carried out by the University of Edinburgh and NHS Fife, which uses a wristband named 'Saving Thumb' to track blood oxygen levels, heart rate and body temperature. and alert your trusted contacts if an overdose is suspected. .

“As part of the second phase of the Reducing Drug Deaths Innovation Competition, funding has been awarded to develop seven prototypes aimed at reducing drug deaths.

If successful, the technology being researched could be rolled out to more sites across the UK.
