A case of tuberculosis has been confirmed at Elmhurst College, and two other people are suspected of having the disease. Free weekly tuberculosis testing in schools
ELMHURST, Ill. (WLS) — Classes continued as normal at Elmhurst College on Monday, despite a student being diagnosed with tuberculosis late last week. Two additional students are suspected of being infected and are currently being tested.
The school notified the DuPage County Health Department immediately after confirmation and alerted the campus community that a deadly bacteria had entered the school.

“The suspected case has tested positive but requires evaluation by a medical professional to determine whether it is active or latent TB,” said Ashley Matthes with the DuPage County Health Department. .
Doctors say that tuberculosis is only contagious through active cases, and that the majority of tuberculosis cases are latent. Tuberculosis, also known as the “white death”, can be fatal if left untreated. It is usually spread by the patient's cough, potentially endangering those nearby.
Since the first case was confirmed, university officials have provided several updates to the campus community, saying, “We are reaching out to those who may have been in close contact with the affected person and offering free testing.” ”, he said in part.
