Biden relegated to back of APEC family photo with Xi Jinping in front

President Biden stood awkwardly in the back corner of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) family photo on Saturday, as other prominent world leaders were spotted in the foreground.

Chinese Prime Minister Xi Jinping was placed in the center of the photo, next to Peruvian President Dina Boluarte. Boluarte welcomed world leaders to Lima for this year's APEC summit.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was seen in the front row to Xi's right, alongside Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

The photos show Biden smiling and laughing with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra as the family photo was taken. This weekend, Biden held closed-door meetings with various leaders, including Boluarte and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba.

The location of the photograph of Biden, who will leave office in January, deviates from the usual stance of US leaders. Last year, Biden was the focus of the APEC 2023 family photo, held in San Francisco. Trudeau and Xi were to Biden's right.

In 2017, former President Trump stood at the center of that year's APEC family photo, alongside Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

The conference took place nearly two weeks after the 2024 presidential election, where Vice President Harris lost to Trump in a huge victory. Biden met with the Republican leader this week to discuss the transition process.

“I look forward to having a smooth transition. We will do everything we can to make sure you get what you need,” the Democratic president told Trump during the meeting.
