Ely family hopes to have infant transplant by Christmas
SuppliedThe family of a two-year-old boy who is waiting for a kidney transplant from his father is hoping to have the operation done before Christmas.
Ali, from Sutton, near Ely, Cambridgeshire, was born with a posterior urethral valve, which caused kidney failure.
He started life-saving dialysis when he was a week old, and his parents Shona and Reece said he spent most of his life in hospital.
They wanted to raise the profile of Peterborough-based charity Kidney Research UK and expand Ali's world to be “more than a house, a car and repeated dialysis”.
SuppliedAli's diagnosis was like being “thrown into a vortex of information,” Shona said.
“We are fighting with him and we are fighting for him.
“He's really an angel. He's so happy, so calm, so laid back and everyone always says how calm he is. He takes everything on the chin.

SuppliedRees, who was matched as a donor, hoped the transplant, scheduled for December, would allow Ali to have his first Christmas outside the hospital.
“Ant's life is so far very limited,” he says.
“If he was healthy he would be in nursery school by now, but he is behind the younger children who are already walking and talking.
“We focused on all the positive things that were happening and took little wins every day. We just have to ride the wave and do it for them.”

Ali will likely need multiple transplants during his lifetime.
“We hope this will give us enough time to carry out research and reduce the long-term impact that his kidney disease will have on his life,” Shona said.
