Survey reveals winter pressures strain staff

Amid winter pressures of staff shortages, illness and abusive patient behavior, NHS staff expect to miss festive events with friends and family, a survey suggests.

The survey of 520 NHS staff, commissioned by NHS Charities Together, found that 51% of those surveyed said December was the most stressful month for them.

Dr Radha Modgill, from Surrey, said: “There's always pressure, but it's especially felt around Christmas.”

A Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) spokesperson said: 'We know that NHS staff have been overworked for years and we understand that hard-working staff have great concerns about the pressures they will face this winter. “I am doing so,” he said.

“Burnout syndrome”

Three in five staff surveyed said they were likely to miss a celebratory gathering with friends and family, and more than half said they were likely to work extra shifts.

It also found that 46% of staff said the dual pressures of personal pressure and work demands over the Christmas period were having a negative impact on their mental health.

Emma Winter, head of retention and wellbeing at Dartford-based Oxleys NHS Foundation Trust, said increased patient numbers and staff shortages over the winter were having a “significant impact” on the mental health of staff, with many said they were suffering from burnout syndrome.

She added: “We have introduced a number of measures to address this issue, from regular employee health checks to creating a mental health prevention toolkit to support our employees.” Ta.

Ms Winter, who has worked in the NHS for 20 years, said that with support from NHS Charities Together, the trust had improved employee engagement and reduced turnover and illness.

Modernized rest areas, virtual yoga sessions, a staff gym and healthy food offerings have all been introduced.

Dr Modgill said: “Where I work, we've experienced several Christmases. There's always pressure, but around Christmas you really feel it.”

She said things had been “really difficult and uncertain” in recent years and it was no surprise that NHS workers were “really feeling it”.

But she added: “It can be a really rewarding time. The people at Christmas A&E are really nice.”

A DHSC spokesperson added: “The NHS offers a range of mental health support to its staff and we encourage NHS staff with mental health concerns to seek support from the NHS Occupational Health Service.” .
