The new childhood center in Sidon is nearing the start of construction

People gathered in Cedon to unveil a fundraising chart.

Work may start on the new early childhood center in Sidon next year if the community can secure the remainder of the funding needed to build the much-needed center.

The Seddon community gathered last week to unveil a banner with an infographic showing how to track fundraising.

Olivia Dunant, a member of the Finance Committee at Awatere Playcentre, said she hopes construction for the new center will begin in early February 2021.

She was really looking forward to starting construction.

The 555-square-meter awateri Early Childhood Education Center will cost nearly $ 2.4 million and will be built on Ministry of Education land next to Seddon Elementary School.

The center will house three Early Learning Centers – Awatere Early Learning Center, Awatere Playcentre and Plunket – in one large building.

The new building is needed because the three buildings that currently house the centers were damaged beyond repair in the Seddon and Kaikoura earthquakes.

It would cost at least $ 500,000 to repair the old buildings, she said, and even after the repair work is complete, they are not insurable.

Dunant said the commission was working with the New Zealand Lottery Commission and in 2019 it received about $ 200,000.

About two months ago, she said, she submitted another request to the committee for more funding.

Dunant said the community has been collecting donations since the first earthquake destroyed them in 2013. But three years later, when another earthquake struck, they began raising funds to build an entirely new building.

“It’s just endless fundraising for buildings,” she said.

It is finally time to move forward and build something more sustainable, she says.

“It would be very nice for the community even though my kids wouldn’t be in it … It’s imperative that we have good services for a thriving community,” Dunant said.

The Plunket building was also badly damaged and demolished in the aftermath of the 2016 earthquake.

“So each of these entities will have their own space that can also be used by other early learning services if opportunities arise,” Dunant said.

Phil Muir, chairman of the Awatere Early Childhood Education Hub Trust, said about $ 315,000 has been raised for the construction so far.

The building will cost about $ 1.7 million, Muir said, and the remainder will be used for landscaping the outdoor area.

About 30 children between the ages of 3 and 5 are enrolled in the Early Learning Center.

“We’d love to be here … but at this point you either build a new one or fix this,” she said.

“For us, it would have been much better if it was custom designed so that we wouldn’t have the repair bills,” Beban said.
