Did you feel the earthquake a week before the last day of August 9? It was scary and we hadn’t had this weird dizzy feeling in many years.

My husband and I were having coffee outside our home in the yard when we heard a little animal crying, we thought it was a rabbit.

Suddenly, the ground was falling violently and the parasols on the picnic tables began swaying back and forth. We’ve heard animals react before an earthquake. Cats were definitely fascinated by parachutes.

The ancestral home in which we live was damaged by an earthquake (7.3 degrees) near Charleston, South Carolina, on August 31, 1886. This earthquake left more than 100 people dead and hundreds of buildings destroyed. It was the worst earthquake on record in the history of the southeastern United States

The 19th century section of our house has earthquake rods running through the walls, but the addition has no such precautions. People in Sparta suffered massive damage in winding roads and bursting water lines.

Honestly, I feel a little uncomfortable knowing that our house was damaged by that huge earthquake in 1886, and that we’ve had a feeling of another lately. Sadly, Sparta continues to experience smaller earthquakes several times a week.

Whippoorwill Academy and Village opened on August 15 for a guided tour. Refreshments were offered to honor the village’s founder, the late Edith Ferguson Carter, who would have turned 90. The music was presented by Jack Thompson and Margaret Carter Martin.

Several former Mrs. Carter art students attended and shared wonderful stories about her. The village had visitors from Idaho to southern North Carolina despite the torrential rainstorms.

This month, all women must celebrate the centenary of women’s suffrage. Our sisters have suffered before us and have worked tirelessly for us to have the right to vote.

Many women were imprisoned for their peaceful protests, which insisted on the right of all women to vote. Years ago, I read about one of my favorite female artists, Mary Cassatt (1844-1926), who disenfranchised her sister-in-law and her brother for opposing a woman’s right to vote. I fell in love with her even more after reading this excerpt. Many hats-worn women post on social media to celebrate the momentous occasion during August. Take out these hats and most importantly, don’t forget to vote.

Ferguson Society is proud of many alumni. Cody Hartley and Lana Hawkins graduated from Wilkes Community College, and both have undergraduate degrees in Letters. Both graduates arrived at Appalachian State University this fall to further their education. We wish them the best.

Cody is the son of Michelle and Harper Hartley. Lana is the daughter of Shanna Hawkins.

Our future chef, Connor Hartley, has his chef certification from the World Council of Churches.

Congratulations to this young man who is pursuing his interest in the culinary arts.

Beaver Creek Advent Christian Church will have services via Zoom again on Sunday.

We are relieved that many of our neighbors are recovering from the Coronavirus and are now discharged from the hospital and back home. They can testify that this virus is not a hoax. We hope they make a full recovery.

As attempts begin to return to school, let us pray that our teachers, assistants, staff, bus drivers and students are safe. This is an issue that concerns everyone in our country.
