Ministry of Health reports first West Nile virus positive mosquito pool in district | Health & Fitness
Three Rivers Public Health Department is catching and testing West Nile virus mosquitoes this year. The first positive West Nile virus mosquito pool in the district has been reported within the jurisdiction.
The Three Rivers Public Health Service has also conducted surveillance in West Nile’s Dodge, Washington, and Sanders counties by reporting dead birds. The Three Rivers District Health Department is most interested in reporting dead birds that are Corvids (American Crow, Black-billed Magpie, Blue Jay). Due to funding changes, Three Rivers no longer collects dead birds for testing.
West Nile virus infection occurs when a mosquito bites an infected bird and acquires the virus. The mosquito then infects humans with the virus. You can’t get the West Nile virus from a dead bird. The best thing people can do to protect themselves from the West Nile virus is to avoid mosquitoes.

• Wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, shoes, and socks
• Be especially careful when going outdoors at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active
