UK, US, Australia, AUKUS underwater drone project to deepen defense partnership – POLITICO

AUKUS is a tripartite security partnership established in 2021 by Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The focus is on countering China’s influence in the Indo-Pacific region by strengthening the military capabilities of the three countries through the deployment of nuclear submarines, known as the ‘first pillar’ of the ROK-US alliance.

The three countries are also working together to develop cutting-edge technologies, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, cyber capabilities, and other undersea and defense systems. This is called ‘Pillar Two’.

The alliance includes Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines from the United States, joint development of the new AUKUS class submarines, and the construction of facilities on Australian soil to accommodate U.S. and British submarines.

Britain and Australia have been scrambling to reaffirm their commitment to AUKUS to Washington after the Pentagon ordered a review of the agreement in mid-2025, raising concerns that the United States could back away from the agreement. These concerns were alleviated last October when U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his support for the alliance.

“The United States, as I have said from the beginning, believes that the review we have conducted has only strengthened this partnership, that we are committed to the AUKUS partnership, and that we are moving as quickly as possible to strengthen the combined submarine force in the Pacific region,” Hegseth said Saturday.

“These three countries are putting real capabilities to work that we will deploy to our warfighters next year, and I am very pleased that we have been able to reach an agreement,” Australian Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles said at the same press conference.

“For too long, too much has been said and too little communicated to AUKUS,” said British Defense Secretary John Healey. “Now that we have three administrations, things have changed, and as President Trump said, we are now fully committed to AUKUS.”
