US imposes new sanctions on Cuban president, Castro family members | Cuba

The United States announced new economic sanctions against the Cuban president and some members of his immediate family, as well as members of the Castro family, in the latest intensification of pressure from Washington on its communist-ruled neighbor.

Among those targeted were the son and a grandson of former President Raúl Castro, who no longer holds an official position but remains a key figure in decisions about the island’s future.

President Miguel Díaz-Canel, his wife and son-in-law were also affected by the latest Treasury Department sanctions issued Thursday, as were the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces and several other entities.

The United States has imposed an embargo on Cuba for decades, but US President Donald Trump has significantly increased pressure on the island in recent months and is openly considering seizing it.

A de facto fuel blockade has worsened the island’s energy crisis and hit its already fragile economy.

Rubio said the sanctions now apply to the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Cuba, the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, Amistur Cuba, and the committees for the defense of the revolution.

“Anyone who provides services to these sanctioned actors risks sanctions themselves. Foreign banks and other companies that provide services to these entities should freeze these activities,” Rubio said.

The Treasury’s latest actions also follow a decision made in 2025, when Washington restricted visas for the Cuban president and other top government officials.

Trump has repeatedly signaled that the Cuban government could be next, after Venezuela, to buckle under U.S. pressure.
