Researchers say Covid-19’s hyperdiffusion event could have triggered 20,000 cases early in the pandemic
The 200-person biotechnology conference in late February is known to have spread as a source of Covid-19 infection very early in the pandemic.
“Finally, over 90 cases were diagnosed in people involved in the conference or their contacts, where there was a suspicion that a hyperdiffusion event had occurred,” the researchers wrote in a study.
Superdiffusion occurs when one or several infected individuals trigger a chain of infections.
“Unfortunate perfect storm”
Researchers genetically analyzed coronavirus sample samples in Massachusetts from the MIT in Cambridge and the Broad Institute in Harvard and various other institutions.
The Broad Institute study that worked on research that the conference, which took place from February 26th to 27th, was a “perfect storm” and that its prevalence could be related to about 20,000 cases. Bronwin McKinnis, the person who contacted CNN, e-mailed him Tuesday.
“Many factors have made this conference an unfortunate and complete storm as a very widespread event. It was unlucky for the virus to be introduced at this conference,” MacInnis wrote in an email.
“This is not a rigorous estimate, but it conveys scale,” McKinnis added.
“If tens of thousands seem to be large, it’s important to point out that it is in a pandemic situation that has infected tens of millions.”
Timing was important. In late February, people were still unaware of the risk of a pandemic.
“It was important when that happened. It was scheduled just as we started to appreciate the imminent threat of COVID at home. If it was a week later, the event would be Maybe it was canceled,” MacInnis wrote in an email.
“It also happened early in the epidemic, so it could be widespread before extensive testing capabilities, shutdowns, social distances, and masking were implemented,” she wrote.

“February 2020 was almost half a year ago, when there was limited general knowledge of the coronavirus,” Biogen told CNN in writing in a statement on Tuesday.

The company said in a statement that it shared biological and medical data with the Broad Institute in April to advance its knowledge of Covid-19.

At the press conference Tuesday, Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker said he saw the February Biogen conference as a “significant event” in the coronavirus epidemic in the Boston area.
