Landmarks are lit green to celebrate earthquakes

Christchurch landmarks were lit up this week to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the start of the Christchurch earthquake sequence.

Sights that lit up green on September 3 and 4 include New Brighton Pier, New Regent Street Shops, Town Hall Ferrer Fountain, Vacca Heena Sculpture in the East Frame, Fanfare Sculpture at Chaney Corner, Christchurch Airport, and the state. Highway 1 Memorial Bridge.

The first earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck in the early hours of September 4, 2010. Between then and December 2011, Christchurch was hit by four major earthquakes and thousands of aftershocks, the most damaging of which occurred on February 22, 2011, killing 185 people.

“The earthquake of September 4, 2010 caused widespread damage and marked the beginning of a period of major unrest in our city,” said Matt Nichols, director of civil and international relations at Christchurch City Council.

“People lost loved ones, their homes and their livelihoods, and it was a painful time for many of our residents.

“ Originally, we planned to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the September 4th earthquake with a civil event that brings people together, but due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Alert Level 2 restrictions, we were unable to do so.

Instead, we will celebrate the anniversary by lighting up some of the city’s landmarks in green – the color associated with growth and renewal.

“ The anniversary sparks thinking.

“As we approach the tenth anniversary of the September 4th earthquake, we know that people will think about what they lost. But we also hope that people will think about how our brave and caring people can support each other, and in general this has been achieved since then,” Nichols said.

More memorial events are being planned for February 22 next year, according to Covid-19 restrictions.
