Levels of total and free metabolites of vitamin D were compared to current health status and adjusted for potential confounding factors such as age, body mass index, smoking, and self-reported health. Total levels of both free and metabolites of vitamin D metabolites were associated with an increased risk of death. However, only free 25-hydroxyvitamin D was predictive of future health problems, not free 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D.
“These data further support the prediction that vitamin D deficiency is associated with adverse health effects in general and an increased risk of death,” said Antonio.
Since this is an observational study, causality and underlying mechanisms remain undetermined. It was also impossible to get specific information about the cause of death in men in the study, which may be a confounder.
