Earthquake damage threatens the stability of the Idaho Monument

Officials said an earthquake in March threatens caves at the Craters of the Moon National Monument.

Two cave experts from the National Forest Service found structural concerns in the National Reserve after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake near Boise on March 31.

A single fracture could collapse, said Wade Vagias, moon crater supervisor.

Eric Bilderback, a National Park Service geomorphologist, said the agency must balance intervention with letting nature take its course. He said his office would plan to conduct additional assessments during the fall to determine how to proceed, state-owned Public Radio Boise reported.

“The last thing we want is to infect anyone,” Bilderback said. “But we are talking about natural processes here. It is not necessary that we alter those natural processes.”

The monument usually hosts public tours, but it stopped them in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
