Or (it's a good one), when you enter the Monroe County Fairground after the bleachers are already crowded and each person is watching you while you walk uneasy to find a seat that is not already occupied?
Basically, I was not ready for a quick experience, straightforward, full of questions and without sensory sensitivity.
I may have watched too many TV shows that show future brides in individual counseling rooms with no distractions other than their own thoughts. Or maybe I have underestimated my own social anxiety which makes me panic at any time when I am physically exposed?
Once I understood the process, I started to have fun with it. But I went through many wide eyes, confused looks at my mother and uncomfortable stuttering before I found "the" dress.
The brides sent me to a covered booth almost floor to ceiling with wedding dresses. My job was to identify the people in the job that I liked the most.
What if I don't know what I want? What if I miss one? What if I don't find him once the nice worker comes back and asks for my conclusions?
Then, I was sent to a fitting room in the middle of the store. Fortunately, I was at the end of a row of about four to five pieces, but I remained clearly exposed so that the whole store could see it.
Before I knew it, I was measured in every nook and cranny and asked if I wanted a bra. I was wearing a bra, but I thought I was supposed to say yes, so I did, and then I walked in almost a full suit disguised as underwear.
My stylist – who was really charming but seemed a little nervous herself, so I was essentially feeding on her energy – dressed me in my first dress, and I left. That's right – there are no mirrors in the fitting room so I had to venture out in public just to look at me adorned with tulle, lace and of trains.
I think I may have heard an auctioneer in the background when I went out in each dress and all the eyes of the store (as if they were) turned to me. In my mind, I was standing on one of those raised white pedestals.
They asked me a lot of questions about the cut and the neckline and the modifications and all kinds of things that I didn't know.
But I tried the perfect dress.
If by any chance Kyle reads this column, I will spare the details for now. But it was good.
I knew how to answer questions, I felt confident in what I was wearing, and it didn't bother me that I caught the eye of various store employees.
But then they made me ring the embarrassing I-say-yes-with-the-bell.
