Coronavirus: Whitty and Vallance oppose “herd immunity”, e-mails show – BBC News
While the UK is introducing new restrictions on social relations to stop the spread of coronavirus, debate continues as to whether the government initially thought of trying a very different approach. At the beginning of the pandemic, Sir Patrick Vallance, the government’s chief scientific adviser, spoke of “herd immunity”: once a sufficient population was exposed to the virus, it would create its natural immunity. Sir Patrick and the government have stressed that it has never been an official policy. The government has denied that there has been any delay in blocking the country, as some critics have suggested. The emails received by the BBC have revealed the alarm of the best scientific advisers in the government in response to Sir Patrick’s words.
