Less than two weeks to apply for a sold support package

Time is running out for Canterbury homeowners who have unknowingly purchased a home with missed seismic damage to apply for a government support package upon sale.

The $ 300 million Sale Support Package is administered on behalf of the government by the EQC, and targets eligible homeowners who purchased a home prior to August 15, 2019 with a stable EQC claim, but who have since discovered missed earthquake damage requiring an over-repair settlement.

“Before the sale support package was announced in August 2019, eligible homeowners who found themselves in this situation basically had no way of repairing lost damage without getting out of their own pockets as they had no recourse from their insurance company,” Says Pep Andrews, head of sales at EQC.

“Repairs that take a home settlement on the EQC roof – typically $ 100,000 for Canterbury Earthquake Characteristics – are more than expensive, and often important and complex.”

“This support package will likely provide eligible homeowners with the financial means to administer their earthquake repairs, helping to permanently resolve earthquake damage to their homes,” adds Andrews.

Eligible homeowners who believe they have, or may have purchased, homes damaged by the earthquake must apply to the EQC by October 14, 2020 to ensure they can be considered for the support package.

A recent email sending of more than 44,000 Canterbury homes purchased since 2011, and additional ads since the two-month extension of orders to October 14, 2020, has resulted in more than 2,700 applications being submitted so far.

“We know that this business is important for homeowners and it is important to us, because it is about fixing properties from the earthquake as quickly as possible and ensuring that Cantabrian residents do not continue to live in homes damaged by the earthquake.”
