Break the myth of breast cancer screening

We all seem to know someone who has had breast cancer. And it makes sense because it is the most common cancer among women and 10 to 12 percent of the female population is diagnosed at some point in their lives.
Fortunately, for many women diagnosed, the results are very good. Advances in medicine and a better understanding of breast cancer and its treatments have made great strides in the last two decades. For example, the understanding of those who benefit from chemotherapy has improved significantly, allowing many women to avoid chemotherapy. Due to the use of screening mammograms, the size of the tumor is also much smaller.
Unfortunately, many myths about mammography are widespread, and someone can delay or avoid screening. Let’s check them and do a fact check.
Myth: Mammograms are harmful due to radiation. Modern mammography equipment produces high quality images with low doses of radiation. In general, we are usually exposed to radiation from sources such as the natural environment each year. The amount of radiation a woman receives on a screening mammogram is about the same as the amount of radiation she receives from the natural environment or background radiation over the course of several weeks.
Myth: After the age of 70, women no longer need mammograms. The peak incidence of breast cancer in Maine is between the ages of 68 and 72. Women should maintain a mammogram each year and consult a doctor about screening.
Myth: If your family does not have breast cancer, you are unlikely to get breast cancer. Only 5 percent of all breast cancers are hereditary. Although genetic mutations are rare, they are being tested more frequently than they are today due to improvements in insurance coverage in recent years.In fact, more than 75% of women with breast cancer have no family history
Myth: When it comes to cancer surgery, the more you have, the better. Women who are candidates for breast preservation are as viable as women who have had both breasts removed. Over the last two decades, the need to remove a large number of lymph nodes has decreased. Techniques have been developed to identify one or two lymph nodes to be tested, eliminating the need for large-scale lymph node surgery for many women.
My message to women is simple: receiving a mammogram every year saves lives.
