Hawks Hockey Set for the Return to State Tournament
Hermantown will play in Monticello on Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the class A quarter-final.
HERMANTOWN, Minnesota – Over the past year, the Hermantown men's hockey team has continued its efforts to return to the state tournament. But after defeating Duluth Denfeld to win the Section 7A title last week to officially strike their ticket to the Xcel Energy Center, this journey has only just begun.
"This is the best time of our lives," said Hermantown senior defender Drew Sams.
The Hawks have returned to the State Class A tournament for the 10th time in the past 11 seasons. But as they have said throughout the season, the goal is to win a state championship.
"This is obviously all for the moment. We have been working on it all year round just to come back, rebuild this program and return to the state tournament, but we are obviously not finished," said said senior striker Blake Biondi.
"One of our main goals was to come back and now that we are back, we are focusing on another thing and that is to win a state championship, so we are going to take a period at once, "added Sams.
First, the Hawks must focus on the quarterfinals, and their opponent is familiar in Monticello without seed. The Hawks have faced the Moose in their last two games with the States, including the 2017 championship game that Hermantown won in double overtime.
"I was part of this team my second year when we played them, so we have a lot of history with them. Drawing them is really exciting, it's a bit of a rivalry now, "said Sams.
"It is a little crazy to think that we have been there three of the past four years and have played Monticello again," added head coach Patrick Andrews.
And the Mooses also remind the Hawks of a familiar Duluth Denfeld Hunters opponent.
"They are very similar teams, very similar skills and they will try to play the same way that Denfeld beat us. They're going to play a big D, rely on the goalies and they're going to try to play pucks and hope they have an attacking chance to take advantage of that, "said Andrews.
Hermantown knows they only have to play their game and remember that in the end, it's just hockey.
"We just have to be smart, stay on top of the pucks, control hard, get them out of their game, let our speed go the way and hopefully everything works," said Andrews.
"We are pretty confident that if we go out and do all the little things that we are known to do. We will use our speed, play well on defense and work very hard, ”said Sams.
