South Korea sticks to flu vaccine program despite posthumous safety concerns of 13 people
Korean officials are working on seasonal flu vaccinations on Thursday, despite increasing demands for suspension, including appeals from a major group of doctors, after the deaths of at least 13 of the vaccinated doctors. Refused to suspend.

According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), at least 11 of the 13 deaths, including a 17-year-old boy, were part of a free vaccination campaign for 19 million teens and the elderly.
“Although the number of deaths is increasing, our team sees the possibility of death from shootings as low,” Jeong Eun-Kyung, director general, told Congress.
This year, South Korea ordered a fifth flu vaccine to avoid what is called a “cold,” that is, people with the flu could develop coronavirus complications and hospital overload in the winter.
Health Minister Park Neung Hoo said, “I understand and regret that people are worried about vaccines,” and confirmed that the free program will proceed.
“We are investigating the cause, but we will re-examine the entire process involving various government agencies, from production to distribution.”
Vaccine providers include Sanofi in France, as well as domestic companies such as GC Pharma, SK Bioscience, Korea Vaccine and Boryung Biopharma, a division of Boryung Pharma.
They offer both free programs and paid services aimed at immunizing about 30 million of the 52 million population.
Of the 13 people who died, 5 received products from SK Bioscience, 3 from Boryung, 2 from GC Pharma and Korea Vaccine, and 1 from Sanofi.
Sanofi did not immediately respond to the request for comment, but all four companies in the country declined to comment.
It was not immediately clear whether Korean-made vaccines were exported or whether Sanofi-supplied vaccines were being used elsewhere.
Medical Association demands suspension
The Korea Medical Association, a group of influential doctors, has called on the government to discontinue all vaccination programs so far to alleviate public concerns and ensure vaccine safety.
Kim Jin-jin, the leader of the opposition People’s Power Party, wanted to cancel the program until the cause of death was confirmed.
However, health officials say a preliminary study of the deaths of six people found no direct link to the vaccine and no toxic substances were found.
KDCA data on Thursday showed that at least 7 of the 9 people surveyed were in an underlying condition.
The free program has been controversial since it launched last month. The launch was suspended for three weeks after it was discovered that about 5 million doses were kept at room temperature instead of refrigerated as needed.
Officials said 8.3 million people have been vaccinated and about 350 side effects have been reported since the program resumed on October 13.
Another paid program allows buyers to choose from a larger pool of companies that manufacture such as free vaccines.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the highest number of deaths associated with seasonal influenza vaccination in South Korea was six in 2005. Officials say it’s difficult to compare to the previous year as more people are vaccinated this year.
Kim Myung-suk, 65, is seeing an increasing number of Koreans deciding to pay for the vaccine of their choice, despite being eligible for a free vaccine.
“Only a few people have died so far, but the number continues to grow and I’m worried,” he told Reuters in the capital, Seoul. “So I’ll get a shot somewhere and pay for it.”
