PM requests restructuring plan for Pakistani railways – Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Given the deteriorating state of the Pakistani Railways (PR) and the increasing number of train accidents, Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday expressed his dissatisfaction with the country's rail system and asked the relevant authorities to develop a comprehensive restructuring plan for the department. instead of going for temporary arrangements.

According to an official press release, the Prime Minister ordered the promotion of a public-private partnership for the overhaul of the country's crippling rail system. He stressed the need to develop a comprehensive plan in consultation with his adviser on institutional reforms, Dr Ishrat Hussain, to reorganize the Pakistani railways.
Expresses concern over loss of life in train accidents and orders Minister of Railways to take action to protect life
Speaking of the increasing number of crossing accidents, the Prime Minister expressed concern over the loss of lives in recent accidents and ordered Minister of Railways Sheikh Rashid to take measures necessary for the safety of persons.
An insider told Dawn that Rashid again complained that out of a total of 3,000 crossings in the country, 1,700 were unmanned and that it was the responsibility of provincial governments to make these crossings safe and secure for commuters.
In this regard, the Prime Minister asked the Minister of Railways to sit down with the provincial governments and prepare a plan to secure crossings vulnerable to railway accidents.
Dr. Ishrat Hussain and other concerned officers attended the meeting. The Prime Minister was briefed on the performance of the railways, public-private partnership initiatives and facilities provided to passengers, such as the installation of WiFi on trains. He was also informed that 130 trains were running across the country, including 15 new freight trains.
Meanwhile, the opposition criticized the government for what it called the poor performance of the railroad department and demanded that the Minister of Railways resign for a large number of train accidents in which dozens of people lost their lives.
On January 28, the Supreme Court ordered Sheikh Rashid to submit a business plan to get Pakistan Railways out of its current state, giving the minister two weeks to do so. Hearing a case concerning the losses suffered by the organization, a bench of three SC judges composed of chief judge Gulzar Ahmed, judge Ijaz-ul-Ahsan and judge Sajjad Ali Shah had expressed his dissatisfaction with the way the minister of railways headed the department.
The Chief Justice also ordered the Minister to inform the court of the October 2019 fire in a train that killed 73 passengers.
