British in Tenerife tests coronavirus

A Briton living in a hotel in Tenerife affected by a coronavirus has tested positive for the disease.

Health officials have confirmed that the woman was diagnosed with Covid-19 after staying at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace, according to Sky News.

She is not thought to have symptoms and was isolated in the hospital, said the broadcaster.

Authorities are now tracing anyone with whom they have been in close contact.

Vacationers at the hotel were quarantined after at least four people were diagnosed with the disease.

British customers who test negative are flown back to the UK, Jet2holidays confirmed.

Vacationers at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace had previously been informed that they should remain in quarantine until March 10.

But tour operator Jet2holidays said on Monday that its hotel guests would return to the UK in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, travel company Tui said 17 of its customers were repatriated to Bristol and Newcastle on Sunday evening after being tested negative for the coronavirus.

A Tui spokeswoman said her remaining 19 vacationers will travel to Britain today, subject to their test results.

The Department of Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (FCO) has said it is working closely with Spanish authorities to ensure that Britons who do not have coronavirus can return home.

A Jet2holidays spokesperson said: We are pleased to confirm that Jet2holidays customers at the H10 Costa Adeje Palace will return with us to the UK on a dedicated flight this afternoon after their negative test results for Covid-19 and provided they show no symptoms at the start.

It is understood that the Spanish authorities are testing British guests at the hotel, those who produce negative results are able to take a return flight within the next 24 hours.

An FCO spokesperson said: If you are traveling with a tour operator, you should contact them. If you are an independent traveler, you will need to make sure you allow enough time to get your test results before you fly.

A Tui spokesperson said the company had arranged enough seats for all customers to be flown back on Sunday, but some were unable to leave the hotel because they hadn't not yet received documents proving that they were negative.

It is a shame for those who could not come, said the spokeswoman. We plan to recover the final people tomorrow now.

Professor Yvonne Doyle, medical director of Public Health England (PHE), said on Saturday that anyone who returns from a hotel affected by a coronavirus should self-isolate until March 10.

She said: If they develop symptoms during this period, they should call NHS 111 and they will be tested for Covid-19.

In a letter to British holidaymakers at the hotel, the PHE said that anyone tested positive for the virus will be kept in isolation by the Spanish authorities until they are negative.

Only then can they return to the UK without any restrictions, according to the letter.

The FCO said that hotel guests should contact the medical test team to book an appointment and notify the Foreign Office of their flight number by calling 0034 928 262 508.
