“Uncompromising” pledge on the safety of coronavirus vaccine trials

Following announcements by US and German rivals, Russia has announced that the Sputnik V vaccine has been shown to be 92% effective against Covid-19.

According to the Russian team, a unique interim result that was not expected so early is the result of an independent analysis of data from 16,000 volunteers who received two injections of Sputnik V every 21 days. Twenty people caught the virus, some of whom received placebo.

Since then, about 36,000 people have needed at least one of two injections, and developers have reported no serious side effects.

The developers also revealed for the first time that 10,000 Russians in high-risk occupations, including doctors, were vaccinated against Sputnik V outside of formal clinical trials.
