Increased opioid-related deaths in the first nine months of 2020
Boston (AP) —Massachusetts opioid-related overdose deaths increased slightly in the first nine months of the year compared to the same period last year, state health officials said Wednesday. ..
By the end of September, 1,517 opioid-related overdose deaths had been confirmed and suspected, according to the state public health service, estimated to be 33 more than in the first nine months of 2019.
Fentanyl continues to be a cause of death. According to the latest data, 93% of fentanyl was present in opioid-related overdose deaths for which toxicological reports were available.
Earlier this year, the state reported an increase in deaths from overdose that could be related to quarantine, and treatment programs, health centers, hospitals, and prisons, departments said.
The state has also received federal approval to allow a licensed treatment program to expand telemedicine services, reduce barriers to treatment, and provide take-away doses of drugs for opioid use disorders.
