Show more “compassion and compassion” to people living with HIV-Patrick | News
Jamaica Patrick, Secretary-General of the Jamaica Serum Positive Network (JN +), urged Jamaicans to play their part in ending the AIDS epidemic by 2030.
He said this can be achieved by showing consideration and compassion for people living with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, and sharing facts about HIV and dispelling myths. He also called for more to be done to promote safe sex and greater support from non-governmental organizations to advance the plight of those living with sexually transmitted diseases.
Last year, 1,500 Jamaicans died of AIDS. This is a 15 percent decrease from the previous year’s 1,800 deaths, reflecting the increase in AIDS-related deaths since 2010.
Patrick was speaking at a church worship yesterday to commemorate World AIDS Day in Christ Church in St. Andrew’s Vineyard Town on December 1st.
The 32nd anniversary will be commemorated with the theme of “global solidarity and sharing of responsibilities”.
JN + defends the rights and concerns of people living with HIV and has more than 1,000 members.
“Although we have made many advances over the years, people living with HIV are essential, especially in rural areas and among the major and vulnerable people at disproportionate risk. We continue to struggle to access new services, “explained Patrick.
He said the challenges involved stigma and discrimination. Violations of privacy and confidentiality, and stigma for taking tests.
“These difficulties continue largely because of the culture that is still afraid to discuss myths, taboos, and healthy sexual behavior. At first glance, these factors seem simple to us. It threatens the effectiveness and effectiveness of our response, “he said.
COVID-19 has disrupted the incomes of more than 340 members, especially those working in the hotel industry.
“We had to support them with care packages and personal protective equipment through support from Food for the Poor, the Ministry of Health, UNAIDS, USAID and other partners. To date, over 3,000 We’ve been offering care packages, but we’re still offering COVID because it’s still here, “he shared.
Fear of COVID-19
Also, especially in the early stages of the COVID epidemic, Patrick has a limited knowledge of the risks of COVID-19 in people living with HIV, and Patrick has a medical facility among members because his immune system is already compromised. And said he was reluctant to visit the pharmacy.
“The farther away you are from the Kingston metropolitan area, the greater the impact.”
“We had to take the locals to the doctor, feed them and pay for the transportation. Directly to help them not neglect their treatment. We had to take action, “said the secretary-general.
He said that sensitization is the key to getting treatment on track, and as a result, they usually travel to pharmacies for anti-retroviral drugs, even though they have a policy of dispensing the drug several times a month. Said he started doing. The government only allows monthly dispensing to avoid out of stock.
He added that on average there are 1,200 to 1,500 new cases of HIV per year, but this year’s numbers have not yet been confirmed.
Please give me more education about HIV / AIDS
In his sermon, Rev. Sean Major Campbell urged the Jamaicans to educate themselves. The fear of the unknown and the prevalence of ignorance perpetuate much of the discrimination faced by people living with HIV.
He remembered the days he attended the World AIDS Day rally in the Cayman Islands. “It doesn’t matter who you are. Any advocacy for HIV control was supposed to be AIDS.”
He continued. “One thing about human rights activities is that when you talk about the right thing, you must be prepared to become a minority who also experiences stigma and discrimination.”
With the COVID-19 pandemic and the AIDS epidemic, the minister now said he needed more global solidarity than ever before.
