Mysterious and Bustling ‘Boom’ Shakes North Okanagan Residents – Keremeos Review

Up to 100 residents of the Lombi area reported hearing a sudden deafening noise after 12 noon on Friday.

And yet, nobody seems to know why.

Rob Blake said the hype sounded like a loud explosion, in a post on the Around the Block Lumby Facebook page around 12:10 PM on November 27.

“It was like a volcano erupting,” Blake said.

The post reads “Has anyone just heard of this great boom, Creighton Valley Road?” Since then, the post has received more than 125 comments, with people reporting that they have heard the audio from various locations in the area.

Some said they heard the loud “boom” from the Harris Creek Road area, or felt a tremor in Valeview. Others have reported hearing sound from as far away as Lavington, Cherryville, and Vernon.

Canadian seismologist Camille Brion said the agency had not seen any signs of an earthquake in the Lumbe region around the time of the report. It is likely that the earthquake is too small to be recorded on the nearest seismograph, she said.

Melanie Winsowski, director of corporate services in Lombi, said she heard the sound of the explosion when she was outside for a walk, but said there was nothing in the village’s schedule of operations – such as the bombing or construction – that could explain it.

“It sounded like an explosion,” said Winsowski, adding that the sound reminded her of the large metal I-rays colliding together.

“But we don’t have a construction like this going on here now,” she said.

Several years ago, residents felt the effects of a sound barrier penetrating deep in the ground. Wenzoski remembers hearing that earthquake as well, which sounded like a train accident to her.

“This day didn’t look quite like this,” she said. “The voice came from the south, directly south of the village office, so it could be anywhere in the industrial area.”

No power outages were reported in the area, and there were no reports of smoke or other apparent effects of the explosion.

The Morning Star contacted the local Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the Lumby Fire Department to find out if emergency officials knew the reason for the ‘boom’.
