SARS-CoV-2 genetic material can be reliably detected in self-collected saliva samples

The survey was conducted at MSK in New York City during peak outbreaks from April 4 to May 11, 2020. Survey participants were exposed to someone who had symptoms of the virus or had the virus.

No significant difference was observed in virus concentration in any of the samples at the time of collection, 8 hours, and 24 hours. These results were validated on two commercially available SARS-CoV-2 PCR platforms, with an overall agreement of over 90% between the different test platforms.
