Sarasota Medical Hospital Receives First Allocation of Moderna Vaccine

Currently, the members of the front-line respiratory therapy team that treated Manati County residents in their 60s will be one of the first members to receive the first two doses of the COVID-19 Moderna vaccine on Thursday.
“These caregivers are vaccinated almost 10 months after the first patient is diagnosed,” said Monica Yadab, director of public relations and communications at Doctor’s Hospital. “This is a pretty big problem.”
These caregivers rolled up their sleeves at the Doctor’s Hospital clinic building at 7 am and the hospital’s chief nurse was set to vaccinate the team.

“We are planning to vaccinate everyone,” said Bob Mead, CEO of Doctor’s Hospital. “But in the first round, immediate immunization will be given to those who are at the forefront of caring for the patient or who are in contact with the patient in the facility.”
This includes doctors, emergency rooms and staff working in the COVID-19 unit. There are 725 caregivers in the hospital.
The Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was the first approved coronavirus vaccine after receiving an emergency permit from the FDA on December 11. Florida has been vaccinated with 367,000 Moderna vaccines this week, with FDA approval.
The State Health Department’s daily vaccine summary shows that 49,932 people had been vaccinated against the coronavirus as of 7 am on Tuesday. Over 40,000 of those individuals were between the ages of 25 and 64.
About 6,000 people over the age of 65 are vaccinated.
According to the Florida Department of Health, Doctor’s Hospital, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and Manati Memorial Hospital are one of 173 state medical facilities across 43 counties and are the first to receive vaccines.
A spokesman for Manatee Memorial Hospital did not immediately return a request for comment.
The state told the Venice District Hospital that the supply of the first allocation will ship on 28 December.
“We are ready to receive the vaccine and will immediately begin the vaccination process for our employees and medical staff,” said Julie Beatty, Marketing Director of Venice Regional Bayfront Health.
Like other hospitals, Venice Regional prioritizes healthcare professionals who provide direct care to the most vulnerable people. 17 hospital personnel test positive for COVID-19 and are self-quarantined.

At Doctor’s Hospital, information on the number of doses of the Moderna vaccine, a drug that uses this type of first messenger RNA technology to generate immunity to the deadly COVID-19, was not immediately available.
According to Mead, HCA-owned Doctor’s Hospital will share vaccine allocations among 15 other hospitals owned by chains in western Florida.
He said the plan would help HCA become more flexible if one hospital in the chain needed more vaccinations. They can be rented from another hospital elsewhere in the chain.
Mead said he was confident that Doctor’s Hospital was well vaccinated.

Sarasota Hospital received 9,600 doses. The hospital vaccinated more than 900 of its 7,000 staff on Tuesday.

Many who vaccinated at the Sarasota Memorial on Tuesday called the moment a “historic day.”
Irene Belmudes, a nurse at the Sarasota Memorial, was the first to be vaccinated at the hospital.
“Many people have died from this very serious illness,” said Belmudes. “For me, (vaccination) is historic. It will go down in the book.”

As of Tuesday, there were 3,070 infections in Sarasota County and 3,478 infections in Manatee County during the first 21 days of December.

“Last year we were hit by a lot of darkness,” said Washington Hill, a doctor at the Sarasota Memorial, who was the first to receive the vaccine. “I think this vaccine gives you the peace of mind that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
