COVID-19 surged 13.9% in Maryland
A surge in new coronavirus cases in Maryland during the week ending Saturday increased by 13.9% with 20,193 reported cases. Last week there were 17,731 new cases of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Maryland is ranked 40th among the fastest coronavirus spreads per capita, according to USA TODAY network analysis of Johns Hopkins University data. Last week, the United States added 1,698,484 reported cases of coronavirus, an increase of 18% over the previous week. Nationally, 46 states had more cases in the most recent week than in the previous week.

Within Maryland, the worst weekly outbreaks per capita occurred in Washington, Dochester, and Worcester counties. Overall, the newest case was added to Montgomery County, with 3,281 cases. Prince George’s County, 3,260 cases. Baltimore County has 2,251 people. Weekly cases increased in 21 counties from the previous week. The share of Maryland’s test results, which returned positive, was 7.3% last week, compared to 6.8% last week, as shown by the USATODAY Network analysis of COVID Tracking Project data. Last week, 277,402 tests were conducted. A week ago, that number was 261,631. Experts should look at the percentage of tests that returned positive, as well as the number of cases, to better understand whether new infection rates are changing or whether test differences are having an impact. States to be important.
The World Health Organization says that less than 5% of locations need to be tested enough to return positive. In high percentage areas, it can be difficult to complete contact tracing in sufficient time to prevent the spread of the virus.
Throughout Maryland, cases declined in three counties, with the highest in Somerset, Washington, and Allegany counties.
In Maryland, 279 people were reported dead from COVID-19 during the week ending Saturday. The week before that, 287 people were reported dead.
