Experts say vaccine campaigns need to be sped up in Missouri
ST. Louis (AP) — Health experts say Missouri has not vaccinated people fast enough to generate widespread immunity by this summer.
Authorities want to inoculate 70% to 85% of the state’s population in order to create sufficient immunity to COVID-19 and reduce the likelihood of the virus spreading widely. This means that 4.3 to 5.2 million people will be vaccinated.
The Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Thursday that only 205,000 Mizurians received the first dose of the vaccine, or about 3% of the population.
“We need more,” said Dr. Stephen Lawrence, an infectious disease expert at the University of Washington. “We need speed. We need as much as we can to really end the pandemic.”
Dr. Clay Dunagan, Chief Clinical Officer of BJC HealthCare, estimates that vaccination of 5 million people by the end of June will require 25,000 to 30,000 vaccinations per day. According to the state, Missouri has averaged about 11,000 people per day over the past week.
As more vaccines become available and more vaccines are approved, the pace of vaccination will almost certainly accelerate, but it is not yet clear how quickly it will change.
Dr. Alex Garza, Chief Community Health Officer at SSM Health and Incident Commander at the St. Louis Metropolitan Pandemic Task Force, told St. Louis Post-Dispatch that it is currently impractical for the state to manage about 30,000 people. The vaccine is given daily.
