Duke University has developed a protective mask that doctors can wear when treating COVID-19 patients

Duke University’s medical engineering team has designed and created a protective mask using 3D printing to protect physicians treating patients suspected of having COVID-19.
The design of the surgical hood is called 3D SHIELD (3D printed surgical helmet IntakE manifold). according to Press releaseEngineers behind the design have replaced surgical helmets, which normally use indoor air, with electric air purifying masks (PAPR), which use filtered air instead of indoor air.
“Basically, (PAPR) is the highest level of protection we can provide to providers, especially those who are intubating patients,” says Eric Richardson, associate professor of biomedical engineering practice in a press release on the project. Said.
Due to the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) gear, Duke made the design available as an open source design that allows other users to 3D print their own version.
The protective mask was tested by a HEPA certified company before use. Currently used by Duke Health doctors to treat people suspected of having COVID-19.
