Hong Kong: Apple has launched a new website with an impressive graph showing how the coronavirus pandemic beat the brakes on life around the world.
The tool visualizes the movements of people in dozens of major cities and countries around the world, based on the number of requests directed by Apple Maps since January 13th.
Governments around the world have deployed increasingly strict containment measures to stop the spread of deadly viruses, showing a dramatic reduction in the number of users who drive, walk or use public transport.
Apple said Tuesday that the purpose of the new website was to help global efforts to try and stop the spread of COVID-19 by providing insights into people’s move to government and health authorities.
Hong Kong and Seoul were one of the first places to be infected with the virus after the outbreak in mainland China, where the number of mobility dropped by 60% in the second half of January.
In the weeks that followed, the disease entered Europe and North America, and Apple’s data show that it had serious effects on movements in these areas.
Since early March, the number of mobilities in Rome has dropped significantly by more than 90%. In the next few weeks, London had a nearly 90% drop in transit rates. In New York City, the epicenter of the US outbreak, the crisis worsened, resulting in a reduction of more than 80% in transit and walking in March.
A similar decline was seen in Sydney in March as Australia strengthened its social distance policy. In Singapore, mobility figures declined, though not dramatically since January, but plunged as a result of the surge and lockdown of events earlier this month.
