Springfield Health Leaders Explain the Benefits of New Guidelines for People Vaccinated with COVID-19
Springfield, Missouri (KY3)-Springfield-Dr. Nancy Yun, Chief Medical Officer of the Greene County Health Department, has been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and is in close contact with virus-positive people. Those who are no longer required to be quarantined for at least 90 days after the second dose.
This comes after new guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on COVID-19.
“It’s possible that protection lasts more than 90 days, but to say the least, 90 days is the smallest time frame we think a vaccine will work for,” says Yun.
Yun says there are criteria that vaccinated people must meet to avoid quarantine.
- At least two weeks have passed since the last dose of the vaccine (second dose for double dose vaccine, first and final dose for single dose vaccine).
- More than 90 days have passed since the last dose of the vaccine
- The individual remains asymptomatic
- Individuals are not residents of long-term care facilities
According to Yun, these people tend to get older and often have multiple health conditions, so they need to be quarantined after close contact with someone who tests positive for the coronavirus.
“I don’t know if the vaccine may be less effective in this population,” says Yoon. “In addition, they can be susceptible to asymptomatic infections and can be difficult to physically distance in a nursing home setting.”
If you do not meet all four criteria, you will need to follow traditional quarantine guidelines.
Julie Warner, Mercy’s infection prevention manager, says she has been vaccinated with both the COVID-19 vaccine and is another step towards returning to normal.
“If you come across someone who wears a mask everywhere now, but doesn’t have one, you’ll find that you’re a little more protected than the average person, so you can rest assured,” Warner said.
According to Warner, Mercy has not yet implemented a new quarantine policy, but it complies with the CDC guidelines and the hospital system will update the policy to match the new policy released.
The CDC and Springfield-Greene County Health Department continue to encourage wearing masks, monitoring distances, and washing hands, regardless of vaccination status.
