An earthquake measuring 3.8 on the Richter scale hit the mountainous region of Afghanistan, west of the capital, Kabul, last night on February 18, 2021, at 10:48 pm local time. The earthquake occurred 84 kilometers southwest of the town of Paghman in the Afghan capital, Kabul, at a depth of 10 kilometers, and the area surrounding the earthquake is mountainous, but inhabited. A few hours after the earthquake, we received nearly 200 reports from users predominantly in the city of Kabul who felt the tremor. Although the earthquake strength is considered low to moderate at 3.8, reports from Kabul city described the shaking as moderate to strong. A number of people also reported hearing an explosion-like sound from the epicenter site towards the mountains before the earthquake was felt. People affected by the earthquake panicked but no injuries or injuries were immediately reported. Damage is expected in areas close to the epicenter, and aftershocks are likely. The source of the blast-like sound is still unknown.
