UC Health researchers studying whether convalescent plasma can keep high-risk COVID patients away from the hospital – CBS Denver
Aurora, Colorado. (CBS4)– Researchers at the UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital are investigating the effectiveness of convalescent plasma in keeping high-risk COVID-19 patients away from the hospital. They are trying to see if giving antibody-rich plasma to patients appearing in the emergency department can prevent them from being hospitalized.

Sharon Holmes is a research participant.
“I don’t think I feel this bad,” Sharon told CBS4 Health Specialist Kathy Walsh.
In late October, 59-year-old Sharon was infected with COVID.
“My fingers were starting to turn purple,” she said. “And I was just exhausted. I couldn’t hold my breath. I felt like I was suffocating.”
Sharon is a switchboard operator who answers UC Health calls. She also does emergency paging. Four days after the COVID case, Sharon went to the emergency room.
“They intended to send me home, but I was really scared,” she said.

Before she left, Sharon was offered another option, the opportunity to participate in a clinical trial of COVID-19 convalescent plasma (C3PO) in outpatients.

“We are struggling to find these effective treatments as soon as possible,” said Dr. Adit Ginde, UC Health’s emergency physician.
He is leading the study of antibody-rich plasma donated by COVID survivors. Participants are COVID patients in the emergency room who have early symptoms, are at high risk, but are stable enough to go home. They get either plasma or placebo.
“The goal of convalescent plasma is actually to get rid of the virus from the body as soon as possible,” Ginde said.
Sharon is a believer.
“I actually feel very good,” she said.
She says she turned the corner 32 hours after the injection. She was later told she got plasma.

Dr. Ginde said that 500 patients are enrolled in the study nationwide. He said researchers hope to determine the efficacy of convalescent plasma for COVID outpatients in the coming months.
