Asahi Shimbun: Expect a giant tsunami if an unprecedented earthquake strikes

Experts said a stronger tsunami than the one that left nearly 20,000 dead in the 2011 disaster could hit coastal areas in northern Iwate Prefecture if an earthquake struck outside the blueprints.

They estimated that a tsunami of nearly 30 meters could destroy the Pacific coast in Hokkaido and the northern Tohoku region in such an event.

For an earthquake along the Shishima Trench, earthquakes of 7 magnitude will hit the towns of Akshi and Hamanaka in Hokkaido. Additionally, it is estimated that a tsunami above 20 meters will hit the coastline southeast of Hokkaido.

An earthquake along the northern part of the Japan Trench would cause earthquakes from the top 6 in intensity along the Pacific coast of Aomori Prefecture and southern Iwate Prefecture.

The commission said that the tsunami, which ranges between 10 and 20 meters high, will strike various parts of the Tohoku region, including an estimated height of 26.1 meters in the Hachinohe region, Aomori Prefecture.
