A controversial project to release genetically modified mosquitoes and fight the disease vector Aedes aegypti in the Miami-Florida Keys has begun this week. Boxes filled with eggs, water and food are placed on the keys below and inside.

This type of mosquito spreads diseases such as Zika fever, dengue fever, and chikungunya fever. Last year, Keys had the first mosquito-borne disease, dengue fever, in 10 years.
According to Oxitec, less than 12,000 mosquitoes are expected to appear each week for about 12 weeks.
The project has been approved by a five-member committee from the US Environmental Protection Agency, Florida, and local mosquito control districts to eradicate or significantly reduce local mosquito populations.
“Public support in the project area remains high,” Oxitec said, but some locals oppose the release of genetically modified male mosquitoes.
Mara Daly of KeyLargo has been protesting the project for nine years and is deeply concerned about whether the release will harm people and the environment.
“The locals have been asking some serious questions over the years. It’s a scientifically simple question that I refused to answer for 10 years,” Daly said. “They say a lot, but without science or evidence, they don’t allow simple tests.”
Daily said Oxytech could have been able to study whether the project would cause an allergic reaction.
“Why don’t they run a simple test to satisfy the locals who are forced to take part in the exams for this project?” Daily asked. “I’m not the only one to ask. Many people have been asking for years. They lied about their success in the past. They lied to my face.”
Mosquitoes will not cause allergic reactions, said Meredith Fensom, Global Public Relations Officer at Oxitec.
