Brooks: Care of a COVID-19 patient separated Blaine doctor from family
Dr. Timothy Roach worked in the hospital during the day screening patients for signs of coronavirus.
At night, he was isolated under his roof, listening to the sound of the children’s voice from the wall.
“When they cried in the middle of the night, I was a little disheartened,” said a physician at the M Health Fairview system, which meant weeks away from his wife and two little sons in collaboration with patients with coronaviruses. Said Roach.
This is the price that some people pay to protect the rest.
His baby, Liam, was two months old and was born pandemic.
My brother Thomas 2½ knew the screen where his father was behind a door trapped inside his house, reading a book and laughing.
“He knew I was doing this to improve the lives of others,” Roach said. “I [told him] Others will do the same. ”
Minnesota doctors and nurses are now leaving the hotel room. Caregivers in nursing homes are sewing their own masks. The grocery store clerk is trying to sanitize all visible surfaces to protect us from unmasked, unwashed items.
The Roach family settled into a routine at the end of every hospital shift. When Roach headed to Blaine’s home, his wife (also a doctor) filled the bucket with warm soapy water.
OB-GYN’s maternity home Dr. Arecha Roach left the bucket in the garage and retired home with the children.
“This seems horrible,” Timothy Roach described his post-work decontamination routine, but I get down to the boxer. Before I get home, I use the warm soapy water that my wife gave me and actually rinse it off in the garage before stepping into the house. Then go directly to the shower from the garage. There, we do more thorough cleaning. “
He then headed to the isolated bedroom where they stocked the mini fridge.
The Fairview system, including the Bethesda Hospital’s dedicated COVID-19 care facility, admits more than 300 patients with coronavirus. It affects one third of the patients in Minnesota who need hospitalization. Roach directly saw what the virus could do.
“You really have to be over-protected in these times,” he said. “By doing more, not less, you get the job done. People are where they are, what they are doing, and risk to themselves and ultimately to others. You need to be careful how to reduce. “
Roach worked with the Patient Under Investigation service for a week to identify coronavirus cases. Some patients came with gasping and coughing, some with stomach pain, some with strange rashes. Some had COVID-19. I didn’t do much.
Fourteen days after the last known exposure, he left the bedroom, walked into the kitchen, and waited for a glass of milk when Thomas came down for breakfast.
“We don’t think we’ve left each other all day long,” said Roach, who is now free to play with Thomas in the garden or even drive to the car wash.
The Minnesota praised the front-door workers from the front door and showered them at the hospital with baked goods.
