Tighter blood pressure control may reduce the risk of irregular heartbeat
Monday, May 4, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -Active treatment of high blood pressure may reduce the risk of some irregular heartbeats, according to a new study.
Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, can cause stroke, heart failure, and other cardiovascular complications. The condition is rising, and an estimated 11.1 million Americans will be affected in 2030. The most common modifiable risk factor for AFib is hypertension, which affects 46% of US adults.

The study included 8,022 people who had a high risk of cardiovascular disease with high blood pressure but no AFib. Half received active treatment with various levels of drugs aimed at reducing systolic blood pressure, the highest number measured, below 120. The other half received treatment to lower blood pressure below 140.
During a 5-year follow-up, 88 in the aggressive treatment group developed AFib compared to 118 in the standard treatment group. This means that people who are actively treated for blood pressure have a 26% lower risk of AFib.
“Our results show the path to prevention of AFib in people with hypertension,” Elsayed Z, director of the Center for Epidemiology and Heart Disease Research at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, NC, the lead author of the study. . Dr. Soliman said.
He said the findings were particularly relevant because there are currently no specific drugs available to prevent heart rhythm disorders in people with hypertension.

The study was limited by the technical limitations of the electrocardiogram, a test used to diagnose AFib that measures electrical activity in the heartbeat, he said. “It’s an elusive illness … probably missed some cases of AFib,” Soliman said.
He hopes future research will investigate whether aggressive lowering of blood pressure can also reduce “downstream complications of AFib, such as stroke, heart attack, and heart failure.”
