Legendary’s ‘My Hero Academia’ live-action movie finds its director – the Hollywood reporter
The live-action adaptation of Legendary from manga sensation My hero university has found its director.
Shinsuke Sato, known for his many anime and manga adaptations, will make his English debut with the project, which has been in development since 2018.
The project currently has no author.
Academic is a manga that has become a sensation around the world, having debuted in 2014. It quickly grew into an anime, which became an international hit and is now in its fifth season.
The story, in superhero tone, takes place in a world where the majority of Earth’s population has some power or “quirk.” The main character is a fanboy named Izuku Midoriya, who was born without a whim and therefore cannot fulfill his dream of going to the superhero academy. After a chance encounter with All Might himself, the world’s greatest superhero, Midoriya vows to work as hard as possible, quirk or no quirk, to become a symbol of peace and a beacon of hope for the world.
The manga, written and drawn by Kohei Horikoshi, has over 50 million copies printed and won a 2019 Harvey Award for Best Manga. There are also spinoffs in manga and anime, contributing to overall success.
Sato has worked in the world of manga and anime adaptation for over two decades. The Toyko-based filmmaker made a splash in the United States in 2016 when his adaptation of the Japanese zombie manga I am a hero won the SXSW Midnighter Audience Award. Among his other works are those of 2018 Inuyashiki, Bleach, and series Alice in Boder’s Land, the latter which was broadcast on Netflix. He also wrote and directed a historic war epic, Kingdom.
Sato is replaced by WME and Grandview in the United States and Origamix Partners in Japan.
