Boston hosts free car movie theaters in July
Coming soon to a Boston city parking lot near you: movies behind the wheel.
A joint effort of Mayor Marty Walsh, Boston Parks and Recreation and the Mayors Office of Tourism, Sports, and Entertainment free movie series in city car parks every Wednesday of the month from 8 July.
Walsh announced the initiative on Twitter Wednesday afternoon with a video edited to look like the start of a feature film, with a logo inspired by Dreamworks.
This public health crisis has changed our lives in an extraordinary way, and this summer will certainly look very different, said Walsh. I know it was missing all the traditions and summer activities that we usually do and love, but even during these difficult times, we always found ways to get together, and that’s what we were doing here tonight.

The first two nights of the drive-in series will take place in the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center parking lot. On July 8, you can watch a double feature film of Moana and Yesterday at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively, while on July 15, you get double billing of Frozen and Jurassic Park at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
On July 22 and 29, pleasure takes over the parking lot 121 Halleck St. in Roxbury, with a screening of Coco at 6 p.m. on July 22 and a double feature film by Trolls and Harriet on July 29 at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., respectively.
Similar to other Massachusetts driving theaters that have opened Coronavirus pandemic, The Bostons drive-in requires customers to park cars at least six feet apart and wear masks whenever they are outside their own vehicle. Customers should also wear a face cover when queuing for dealerships or restrooms, which will be cleaned regularly.
All movies are free and open to residents of Boston, but guests must register with Eventbrite beforehand. You will need to present a printed RSVP or email confirmation upon arrival. To limit traffic, the city asks residents not to arrive before the scheduled opening time of the gate.
