When Ashok Kumar’s Marriage Was Called Off Because He Became An Actor: ‘It Was Considered Unsavory At The Time’
The late actor Ashok Kumar may have been the first Indian film actor to become a star. He made his film debut in Jeevan Naiya in 1936 and with Achhut Kanya, which was one of the biggest hits of that time, Ashok Kumar happened. When asked how he finally met his wife, Dadamoni, as he was affectionately known, said he first met his wife Shobha when she was eight and he was 18. “At that time, girls weren’t allowed out of the house. . He recalled that he was not informed of his own marriage and heard about it while traveling to Calcutta (now Kolkata). “One day in 1936, my father called me in Khandwa. I went. My father met me at the station. He said we were going to Calcutta. Afraid of him, we went there. We never interviewed him,” he said. It was on the way that he learned that they were going to Calcutta to marry him, even if he was not ready for it.
“I was not ready to get married – I thought I would only get married when I started earning Rs 500 per month. Now I was only earning Rs 200. My mother was not sure if I would accept marriage. As everything was arranged, I said yes,” he said. Actor Mahal said that when he got married he was 25 and his wife was 15 and he didn’t didn’t remember that it was the same woman he had seen when he was 8 years old.
He shared that they were introduced a day before their wedding and he had no say in the matter. “She was introduced to me a day before our wedding. I had no say in my marriage. At the time, it was the right thing to do,” he said.
Ashok Kumar and his wife Shobha Ganguly remained married until his death in 1986.
