Bears' Caleb Williams texted Jaylon Johnson after 'Hollywood' comment – NBC Sports Chicago
Bears cornerback Jalen Johnson clarified a comment he made about Caleb Williams before the draft that many people interpreted as criticism.
During an appearance on “Up & Adams” in March, Johnson suggested that Williams could be high-maintenance and could bring a “big man on campus” attitude to the locker room.
“Just humble yourself when you walk into the building,” cornerback Jaylon Johnson said on “Up & Adams” in March. “You can’t bring that Hollywood thing into the building, especially with guys who have played this game at a high level for consecutive years – myself, Tremaine. [Edmunds]T.J. [Edwards], Keenan Allen. We'll see through this. What you did in college, in Hollywood, it's like you have to prove yourself. This stuff doesn't matter.
“You also have to get to know him. I think there's a fine line between trying to prove something to him, but you also have to get to know him. Because ultimately we want him to be the best he can have. That's why we invite him to win games. I really think it's just learning who he is as a person and learning that more deeply than everyone else. Hollywood stuff that you see, but actually trying to learn and know him and know him and then know from there what drives him. The Bears then selected Caleb Williams with the first overall pick in last week's NFL draft, but Johnson insists Williams texted him before the draft to assure his future teammate that he focuses on winning.
“This conversation [on Up & Adams] was taken completely the wrong way,” Johnson told “Parkins and Spiegel” on The Score. To me, people were just trying to be clickbait and didn't even consider the full context of the damn conversation.
Johnson said radio host Kay Adams was the one who brought up the “he's Hollywood” narrative, and he was simply responding to her hypothetical scenario.
“He texted me and we talked a little bit and we kind of clicked, but I cleared things up,” Johnson said. “He hit me and said, 'Hey, I'm a winner, I just want to win.'
“We had that conversation. I think everything was fine. Then I talked a little trash about Utah and USC, and everything was fine.”
